Council Seat #2

Candidate Answers

  1. WHY ARE YOU INTERESTED IN RUNNING FOR OFFICE FOR THE CITY OF POCATELLO?

I believe that most qualified candidates can bring their own unique skill set to the role of a city council member. Twenty-six years in the financial services industry with ample board room experience from the private sector provides a unique qualification. When looking at the existing and proposed candidates I think my skill set is unique enough that it brings a different perspective that currently does not exist on the city council.

I am interested in participating in group discussions that benefit all stakeholders, which includes the total citizenry of Pocatello. Working towards creating an organization that is intended to be non-partisan would be a welcome challenge.

I have the time and commitment to put forth towards this endeavor.

  2. IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT IS THE MAJOR ISSUE FACING POCATELLO?

I believe the major issue facing Pocatello is creating a budget that can accommodate and meet all the needs of its citizenry and business community. Idaho metrics tend to not bode well for us in certain areas. Higher education attainment 35.1% ranking 44th; etc. While we have low unemployment, we have too many not earning living wages. Having a well educated and qualified workforce is equally important. These issues impact revenues to all governmental entities as they rely on a tax base.

Government entities need to have their mission set. The smallest government necessary will usually yield the best result in my opinion. It is important that your leadership in any government entity understand what the proper role of government is.

    (a)  HOW WOULD YOU ADDRESS THE ISSUE YOU JUST DESCRIBED?

When reviewing our entire budget, you must ask yourself if the expenses are the proper role of government. Does it compete against the private sector and does it make sense for the city? Can we become more efficient and where with the same or smaller workforce? Are we investing into the most asset that the city has, which is its employees? Focus on the most expensive items such as payroll, benefits, etc. Some city’s have adopted their own primary health clinic staffed with RN’s, and PA’s that are employees. For primary care services provided to employees and their families, they have reduced their overall healthcare costs and provided better outcomes. Can you contract for road maintenance for less as opposed to owning the equipment outright?

  3. IF ELECTED, WHAT WILL YOUR FIRST PRIORITY BE?

A review of the expenditures and revenues and reviewing the long-term strategic plan of the City of Pocatello. If one does not exist, then I would be recommending this at my first city council meeting. A strong assessment of existing benefits and pay as this will comprise one of the largest expenditures in the city budget. Promote investment in training and education for department level and up.
