Now that the winter weather is officially here, the Pocatello Police Department’s Code Enforcement division would like to stress to residents and businesses their responsibility to remove snow from their sidewalks.
Pocatello City Code 8.14.060 states, “The responsible party of any premises within the municipality abutting or adjoining any public sidewalk shall be required to remove all snow and ice from any such sidewalk.” Officials also add that it is illegal to move, blow, shovel or throw snow into the street.
“Snow and ice on sidewalks are safety issues,” said Dianne Brush, Community Services Specialist with the Pocatello Police Department. “Children walking to school, the elderly, anyone who uses the sidewalk could slip and fall and be injured.”
Renters are encouraged to talk to their landlord or consult their rental agreement to determine whether the landlord or tenant is responsible for removing snow and ice.
If you have questions about snow removal on your property, please contact the Code Enforcement division at 234-6287. You can also report potential code violations online at pocatello.us/376/Code-Enforcement.
